What Members Are Saying:
"PRACTICAL HELP! Really helped me to become more aware of the language of brushwork. I try to work on creating simple big shapes and value structure, but I now see that's just the springboard for creating expressive brushwork that lets me exercise more control of light and form. Thank you, Phil, for sticking to the points you were making rather than trying to just give us a slick demo. I got the help!"
- Jimmy L
"I am learning so much from these lessons. I really like that I can watch them over and over to drill the information into my brain. I have taken workshops from a lot of big name artists but the way you explain things is so much more clear than I remember from the workshops. As an example, a lot of instructors talk about how we need to simplify the information in a photograph or a scene we are seeing outdoors but, the depth you go into to explain it and demonstrate the process helps me to understand it in a way I had never understood before. The same is true for values and temperature, brushwork...everything."
- Patricia T
Many thanks, Phil! Your help and advise has pushed my painting along greatly. I'm painting every day from nature and following your sound instruction. I've learned more working with you than 3 years at art college. Many thanks again for your great help.
- Sean O
I felt like I had to let you know that I am thoroughly enjoying my new easelinsight membership!!! You are FABULOUS! I am learning so much watching your videos. The information has inspired me to get back into painting after a very long time.
Some day I hope to attend one of your classes! Thank you SO VERY MUCH for making this wonderful program available to your students!!
Warmest regards,
- Nancy P
I am an art director and graphic designer here in the great state of Utah. I grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona so I love the red rock photos you've posted as well as the mountain scenes. I graduated from NAU and have worked as a graphic designer for almost 20 years. I paint almost every night. I wish it reflected in my work.
I just joined your site and it's already one of the best investments I've made. I can't say enough nice things. It's inspirational, so informative and something about the way you teach, just speaks.
I wish I had your lessons years ago. Maybe I'm just now in tune, not sure. I can't wait to practice the concepts and join the conversation. Never stop posting, please!
- Pamela R
This "bite sized" teaching is the perfect venue for me after dvds, workshops & online teaching/courses that usually overwhelmed me, although the information was valuable. I enjoy Phil's teaching manner & know I will enjoy looking forward to the journey, and sharing it with other painter/members. Thanks so much for this opportunity!
- Susan L
I'm so thrilled about being able to study with you, finally some order on how I will go about improving my work, I used to just watch videos, read books but still was so confused on how to put all those together in such a way that I could apply the bits and pieces. Thank you!
- Chona D
I am a Canadian living in France now. You would think that there will be lots of art teachers in France? But that is not the case and I was very glad to join this group. Thank you so much. I have watched lots of videos and am very delighted by the quality and professionalism. Looking forward for enhancing my skills. Sorry for my english as I am French-Canadian.
- Michel B
After watching your videos, I realize I have given too much attention to trying to paint details that I see in the foreground without simplifying shapes and values firstly and secondly not designing a composition that leads the eye significantly into the painting. Today I'm going to use these two learnings and redesign a previously painted seascape. I'll post the before and after when I'm through.
- Susan L
I'm excited to belong to this unique community and sitting under outstanding teaching. You explain things in such an understandable way and not too fast. This is a perfect venue for all of us in our journey. God bless you for your unselfish teaching and help. I'm 71 and still have that drive to learn. This enables me to practice what you teach at my own pace.
- Linda L
Great Demos!! I'm really excited to be part of this group. I feel like I've learned a lot and it has only been 24 hours! I always struggle with rocks and I loved the demo. I mess around too much. You really simplified things. When you added the reflected light to your foreground rocks, what a difference that made. An "A-ha" moment. Really helpful. Thanks.
- Jacqueline B
These videos are enormously helpful to me. Thank you. Dividing the painting into receding sections and adjusting colors and values appropriately finally made sense to me. Sometimes it takes awhile for things to click in my thinking. It was happening intuitively SOMETIMES, but I think my crazy habit of adherence to flat photographs as truthful has finally been smashed. I like your examples with the photographs, I could see it!
- Rosemarie C
After watching many of Phil's videos and honing in on the way he mixes and uses color (from the color wheel), I set a still life up to see if I could see and mix the color I was seeing in a more logical way. I picked a couple of vases that had a difficult color to analyze. Before Phil, I would have been mixing many colors trying to get that particular color ... of course, not remembering what I had mixed! .. So, I followed Phil's line of thought .. start with a color from the wheel. I am pleased with the ease I was able to "get the color". Thanks Phil for the excellent instruction on color!
